3 Marketing Metrics Every Business Owner Should Check Weekly
If, as a business owner, you check 3 marketing metrics every week, you're already ahead of 80% of Hungarian SMEs. That's not an exaggeration — most companies either don't look at marketing data regularly at all, or they're looking at the wrong numbers: follower count, likes, impressions. These sound good, but they say almost nothing about the business.
In this article, we'll look at the three metrics that actually matter, and that a manager can review in 15 minutes a week — no dedicated analyst required.
1. Cost Per Lead — how much does an inquiry cost
Cost Per Lead (CPL) shows how much it costs to acquire one lead. You calculate it by dividing your marketing spend by the number of leads acquired. If you spent 300,000 forints in a month and got 30 leads, your CPL is 10,000 forints.
Why does this matter weekly? Because a change in CPL is an early warning sign. If it rises 30% from one week to the next, something's broken: the ad got fatigued, competition shifted, targeting degraded. Whoever checks weekly notices within days. Whoever only checks monthly finds out after a wasted month.
This is especially sharp in Q4: increased ad competition naturally pushes CPL up. If you're not tracking it, you won't even notice you're paying more and more for the same lead.
2. Conversion rate — how many visitors become leads
Conversion rate measures what percentage of your website visitors turn into an actual inquiry — a quote request, a signup, a call. If 20 out of 1,000 visitors request a quote, that's a 2% conversion rate.
The healthy range in most B2B sectors is 1.5–3%. If you're below that, it means you're attracting the visitor, but something is going wrong along the way: the page is slow, the offer is confusing, getting in touch is hard. And here's the key point: improving conversion rate is often cheaper than buying more traffic. If you double your conversion rate, you get twice as many customers from the same traffic — with no extra ad spend.
3. Source breakdown — where the leads come from
The third metric shows where your leads are coming from: Google search, Google Ads, Facebook, Instagram, referrals, organic. This metric reveals the health of your overall system.
The warning sign: if 70% or more of your leads come from a single channel. That makes you fragile. If that channel changes — its price goes up, its algorithm shifts, a campaign gets shut down — a significant share of your revenue can dry up overnight. A healthy system stands on multiple legs, and the source breakdown shows you how many legs you actually have.
15 minutes, once a week
These three numbers together can be reviewed in 15 minutes, with no need for a dedicated analyst. CPL shows your efficiency, conversion rate shows the strength of your website and offer, and source breakdown shows the stability of your system. If you check these three every week, you'll always know where you stand — and you'll catch most problems before they become serious.
At most Hungarian SMEs, this routine is simply missing. Not because it's hard, but because no one ever told them what's actually worth watching. Now you know.
